Despite being one of the wealthiest nations, many in the U.S. consistently struggle to access sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. This widespread issue affects urban, suburban, and rural areas alike. According to the USDA, about 10.2% (13.5 million households) were food insecure in 2021, a rate similar to 10.5% in 2020 (13.8 million households) and 2019 (13.7 million households).
Challenges in Texas
In Texas, 13% of households—1 in 8 Texans—face food insecurity, affecting 1.4 million households and nearly 4 million people. Texas ranks among nine states with rates above the national average.
